I support the principle of redeveloping Buxton town centre and agree that the site would benefit from substantial regeneration. The current buildings are outdated and redevelopment offers an opportunity to improve the town centre. However, I have significant concerns about the amount of housing proposed. I believe a better balance should be struck between residential, commercial and community uses. The town centre should be preserved as being commercial and community rather than residential, there is insufficient parking and other infrastructure and considering all of the new build estates recently, buxtons infrastructure (NHS, schooling, council, etc) is simply unable to keep up with this and I am sure these houses will not be reasonably priced for young professionals. I also disagree with the strong emphasis on cycling infrastructure. Buxton is a rural and hilly town and, despite investment in cycling facilities, I do not believe cycling will become the main form of transport for most residents and visitors. Any redevelopment should also reflect Buxton's character and heritage. New buildings should use materials and designs that are sympathetic to the town's limestone architecture and distinctive appearance. Subject to these comments, I support the redevelopment of the site.
